As a foundation for future initiatives and fostering dialogue, the Global Security Barometer helps unite stakeholders and engage the global community in overcoming obstacles to creating a safer world.

Future iterations of the Global Security Barometer (GSB) will expand and refine data collection and include benchmarking against other industry sectors to identify distinctions within the security services industry. The inaugural edition of the GSB will establish a baseline for future measurements, providing a snapshot of the state of global security and the current conditions in which private security services operate. Based on the perspectives from top executives at the leading security companies of the world, the GSB will establish baseline ratings for regions around the world on critical issues facing businesses, governments, and the security services industry.

Industry Conditions

The number of private security professionals globally exceeds that of public law enforcement, just one indicator of how critical an effective and professional security industry is to the safety and security of people around the world. However, the ability of firms to fulfill this critical role is shaped by the conditions in which the operate. Factors such as public opinion towards private security, regulation and licensing, and labor market conditions can either help drive success or create obstacles. Volume I of the GSB establishes baseline scores in these areas—both worldwide and in six global regions—as well as for other critical areas that impact the private security industry.

How mature is the security marketplace? Are contracting relationships built around trust and quality or strictly on price?

How professional is the working relationship between the private security industry and public law enforcement?

How involved is the private security industry in driving regulation of technology in ways that both protect privacy and enhance safety and security? Is the industry included in discussions or are their perspectives not considered?

State of Security

The world’s leading security companies are uniquely positioned to both understand risks and to observe the current level of protection and state of preparedness around the world.

GSB Volume I takes the temperature of the world’s readiness on a range of issues, including providing global and regional ratings on the level of understanding about security the risks and consequences, the maturity of corporate security culture, and the level of preparedness at critical infrastructure—both public and private—to prevent, respond, and mitigate acts of terrorism and high-consequence threats.

The initial Global Security Barometer—by scoring the threat environment—facilitates focus on areas of greatest risk and provides a baseline against which future progress can be measured.

While surveys about security risks are not uncommon, this is the first to take the temperature of top operational leaders at the world’s leading security companies, allowing for the creation of an informed roadmap charting a course to safer societies.
